大导演伍迪·艾伦(Woody Allen)新作Café Society《咖啡公社》大卖。有一处的台词：Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." But the examined one is no bargain，的确堪称经典。
苏格拉底（Socrates）在他72岁高龄时，法庭要因他的“对神大不敬和教坏年轻人”而判他死刑，他的《答辩词》（Apology of Socrates）有一句名言“The unexamined life is not worth living.”
只要扫一眼，您就会发现苏格拉底的这个名句灵魂在于 unexamined！
根词examine有多种意思。大家都知道，examine一般作“检查、审视；考试”等意思解，此外，精彩的来了...... examine还有另一种用法：
examine v.（在法庭上）质问（对方）。[cross-examine v.(法庭上)盘问，交叉质询]
鉴于此，苏格拉底说的 the unexamined life其实表达的就是“一个未经法庭充分质证过的人生（苏格拉底作为被告，却主动选择经由法庭判决后受死结束他的生命。可是，他本可以选择在弟子的安排下逃亡的）是不值得活着的”。看到没有，examined life有没有一种偏向虎山行的“天将降大任于斯人也”的味道？
《孟子·告子下》云： “天将降大任于斯人也，必先苦其心志，劳其筋骨，饿其体肤，空乏其身，行拂乱其所为，所以动心忍性，增益其所不能。＂这里抄录一下大卫·亨顿（David Hinton）的英译：
"So it is that whenever Heaven invests a person with great responsibilities, it first tries his resolve, exhausts his muscles and bones, starves his body, leaves him destitute, and confounds his every endeavor. In this way his patience and endurance are developed, and his weakness are overcome."
现在更好理解一点了吗？
于是，探长把苏格拉底的《答辩词》（Apology of Socrates）中的名言“The unexamined life is not worth living.” 译为：＂浑浑噩噩的人生，无异于行尸走肉！”
那么 “The unexamined life is not worth living，but the examined one is no bargain” 就可以译为：“ 浑浑噩噩的人生，无异于行尸走肉！但是经受过拷问的人生，从来都不是廉价的苟且！”。
现在是“全民创新”的时代，翻译也常常要顺应时代译出新意。

都说“宝宝心里苦”（ Woe is me！），其实啊，是人皆苦（Everybody has a woe！），世人皆苦，众生皆苦（All in the game！）
