2. Memorizing a word doesn’t mean you can use it properly. I find one single word may have many many different meanings and explanations even in some well-known dictionaries. So I feel the best way to learn a word is to see how native speakers use it and try to use it repeatedly and properly. It is quite easy to forget the word if you don’t repeat using it.
3. I agree with dumpling at one point that one cannot get good sense of English if one just practises it with Chinese. But what if you have no chance to put yourself in an English environment? What if you cannot even express yourself precisely even in front of Chinese? There are different levels.
