好像书评不怎么好么,我挺相信AMAZON的书评,一般不好的书不敢买。不信你拿自己看过的书查查他的书评。

Not worth your time or money, April 29, 2003

I am a sales professional and am constantly looking for books to help better myself. This was definitely not one of them... This book was simplistic and lacked advise that would apply in the real world. The overview suggests that this book will help you with networking and business relations but very little of it applies. If someone approached you at a business function and asked you "What was the best job you ever had? What was the worst?", what would you think? How about "What would you like to come back as in your next life?"? These are just a few of the lame suggestions this author suggests to "break the ice" and begin a conversation. I wish I could return this book...

The begining of the book was useful. It talked about the little things that you can do to leave positive impressions on people. After that it got too much into business scenarios, I was looking for a book more on general conversation.
But if you're looking for a book to tell you what you can do at a business gathering, this should help you out.

I really wanted this tape to be effective. It is important for me to improve my conversational skills in my job if I hope to advance. The tape is just hard to listen to. It is like listening to someone just ramble on and on. It is a taped seminar and I can only assume that the author was required to give a 2 hour presentation. The problem is that there is only about 15 minutes worth of material. The author repeats herself constantly, gives 5 or 6 examples of points when 1 is sufficient, and really just beats around the bush instead of getting to the point. She tells many stories about herself, which frankly are not engaging. Really there is nothing of value here. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

  • 工作学习 / English / 前几天在amazon上买了一本书<The Fine Art of Small Talk>,里面有非常详细的例子说明了在各种场合如何与native speaker在各种场合说废话,拉关系,保持顺利的对话,以及如何在对话中留下好的印象。我觉得非常实用,介绍给大家。

      • 通用的招数恐怕只有:Hello, nice to meet you, byebye 了您呢! 要不就是在边上傻笑,猛陪无知的笑脸给鬼佬鬼婆,奥,还有pardon me。
        我们中国人不比什么印巴人,东欧人,南美人差,为什么给人的映像就是英语太差。学学香港人是如何学习英文的吧。

      • 其实我不建议同种类型的书买两本,因为英文不是我们的母语,速度必然太慢。所以我们必须先保证看书的宽泛面,然后才讲到深度。另外在和老外的交往中经常被问到一些“知识面”的问题,等我收集一下贴出来。
      • 从amazon的读者评价来看 Conversationally Speaking 还要好些。但很多读者是当地人,未必适用我们。建议去图书馆或书店先翻翻看。另外,Conversationally Speaking 在美就10美元左右,在amazon.ca要30加元,简直是打劫

    • 我平时看电视时候专门在边上放着小本本,By that can I instantly grasp the specific speaking towards the specific situation. 这样以后一有这种相关情形出现,立刻有内容挑到我脑子里。以前在新加坡买过类似总结small talk
      的书,后来发现居然在这里的电视里都可以看到。

          • Actually the books in Chapter are around 10% higher than in Amazon, resulting from the different business model and the consequent inventories. Alternatively, you can make sure to call Chapter's customer service.

      • 其他的书可能是这样,但是学习语言的书就不太应该跟老外的评价,他们的角度与我们学习语言的角度不同。我们需要的是立刻能用上的英语废话和客套话,这点他们不需要学。
    • 用了一个星期的时间终于看完那本small talk 的书了,我的品论与网上有些不同,因为我是中国人,书中内容对native speaker基本是废话,他们从小就会并且在各种场合经常用,
      但对我,虽然都听的懂,但说不标准。要我给个评分,大概是80分,也就是说,要是作者少写些论述的话就跟精炼了。
    • 今天在我同事面前show off 了两句从small talk 书里学习的话,果然让他打开了话匣子,我自己觉得与他的关系比之前融洽些了,
      最起码,让我自己很开心,希望同胞们也能把英语说的很开心而不是一种负担

    • 在书店browse了这本书,感觉对大部分中国人用处不大: 书中主要解决内向不会说话的人如何开口说话的问题,而这边大部分中国人的问题是如何表达英语而不是学会如何开口说话。
      • Do u think if u can express in native way exactly same as on the book or TV show? I am afraid that most of Chines though they were speaking English, but unfortunately they speak Chinese English.
        I am not an exception, what about you? No hard feeling.
        • Considering you want to learn this, you can learn anywhere, even one simple conversational book in English or one English movie, that is same with that book.
          In fact, watching 'friends' or 'everyone loves Ray' does far more help than that one.
          • I feel the same way. Anyhow, that book gives us a summary complementing "Friends" or "Will & Grace" and alike.
            From the bottom line, we don't want to put all eggs on one basket. Otherwise, there is nothing you can fall back on.
            • Thx for sharing ur personal opinion. IMO, the more difficult for most is how to expand a topic when ur partner does not show interest to ur topic at all:-) Just kidding
