Non-English languages use diacritics as an integral part of their spelling system. Some of the more commonly used diacritics include the accents acute ( ´ ), grave ( ` ), and circumflex ( ˆ ); the macron ( ¯ ); the breve ( ˘ ); the diaeresis or umlaut ( ¨ ); the cedilla ( ¸ ); and the tilde ( ˜ ). The marks are used to give a different sound to the letters they adjoin.
