shill, “托”:-) Thank you for sharing your experience.

I watched Jerry's video clip the other day. His accent was impressive. I was always wondering how his class would be like. But I did not intend to attend his class because I do not think that is the right way to learn English. And I feel like he benefits more from his customer service experience than his techniques. So the point here is to speak as much as possible to local people is the best way to learn oral English. But oral English is not enough. We also need written English. We need to enlarge our vocabulary. We do not want to be an illiterate here. So learning English is no different than learning Chinese. What I am doing now is reading English newpapers, magazines and all kinds of books; watching TV for about 1 hour and a half everyday. Speaking, I have to speak English to make a living here. It seems people can understand me and I usually have no problem understanding them, either.

  • 工作学习 / English / Jerry storm english
Anybody has english class from Jerry Dai, How is his way.
    • he's great.
      • really, how can I contact with him?I wanna to improve my english.thanks in advance
        • This coming saturday, there will be a seminar starting from 1pm, held by Jerry in this location.
          • 怎么感觉象新概念的托呢
            • Thanks a lots. I mean the way Jerry Dai used maybe good for his age(20 ys), For us(30 ys), maybe not so userful.
              • And this guy is very good at speech, that is what i worry about.
              • I have made it through. Already there are people who mistook me as local when I speak English to them on the phone. I believe we in 30's can make it too, as long as you really pay attention to your pronounciation.
                • I think you are mistaking us.I do not believe you can fluently communicate with local people without any problem after few lessons. you are kidding
                • Moreover pronounciation is not the most important, some indian brothers who have accent may communicate well with local people. Only in my opinion, the way to think in English is important.
                  • What can I say? Don't get me wrong. I never took any English class, nor am I advocating for Jerry. But I believed him, because I have a lot of similar exp. in making my speaking and pronounication precisely Canadian.
Can you not believe other people can do things that you cannot do yet? I believe you're smart too. It's that you don't believe and you don't try hard. If you can leave your phone number, we find out how to achieve that. I have a lot of experiences in overcoming typical Chinese pronounication problems and the Canadian ways of speaking.
                    • The esiest way of "overcoming typical Chinese pronounication problems" is to adopt some NOT-THAT-TYPICAL Chinese pronounication problems.. :-D...Seriously, that's what many people do
                • Oh, sorry buddy for mistaking you here, I participate this topic becasue I have the same aim with you to achieve.
I like to get advice from expert, here is my cellphone 416-802-5188, Andy. I am eager to
                  make my english through .
          • Thanks to Grace and Freeman. I brielfly talked with you guys today. I had a great English conversation with Grace in particular.
While you guys seem to think making your talk clear is your next step to take, I am more focused on making my pronouciation more Canadian day by day. Of course, there is no end to improving English communication skills. It takes a whole lifetime. And that's true for learning anything perfect.
      • Most of your points make sense. But I have a different perspective on your last point.
I have met many people who have lived in North America for over 10 years, and still speaking the same kind of Chiglish (Chinese English). In fact, only perhaps 5% of people can really change their pronounication habit. People who can will do it in the first five years, and those who can't will never be able to do it. I used the word habit because I know how hugely different it is to make each and every English sound than using our Chinese speaking habit, even for words as simple as "it is". Unfortunately, most of our Chinese people have not come to realize that, and thinking they are doing just fine.
        • That's true. And that's my point. So it also has to do with individuals. Some people like to change. Some do not.
That's why so many people can not speak Shanghainese after living there for 40 or 50 years. For me, I like new things, I like changes. I may never be able to sound like a native speaker. I believe I will sound more like them over time --- a long period of time. :-)
    • To be honest, Terry is a smart guy, but he's a terrible, terrible English teacher - he doesn't know how to teach at all.
I attended his class with desire to improve something in English, but I got nothing, and waisted my time and money, and lost confidence. He doesn't have any skill to teach and motivate students, just shouts at students instead.
We're supposed to learn English culture, a part of his class, but he doesn't know any. He repeated and repeated his experience of selling hydro power and telemarket during his whole 8 week class, so that we almost fell into sleep.
And the most important thing is that one third of his pronunciation mothed is wrong compared to official Canadian and American pronunciation books and videos (it's easy to borrow in TPL), and he makes it in a very difficult prononcing way.
Now I spent my money and quality time to learn English from a LICENSED canadian teacher. I'll never ever learn English from an unlicensed, unskilled Chinglish teacher.
      • Interesting experience. But I advise you not to spend any money on English any more.
I have to agree to what you said, becaues I don't have any experience with his course. I only listened to his seminars and some of his seminar recordings. I feel he has really broken it through in his own way, but perhaps it doesn't work for other people. I think you don't have to spend money on English. Language is a natural skills, you can fly on your own.
        • Hi pal, I said Jerry is smart, but here what we're discussing is Jerry's class, not Jerry himself - I attended his class and share the information to people, but you didn't! Jerry seems your hero!
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Jerry is a terrible, terrible English teacher, because he's not a competent English teacher, even he doesn't know how to teach at all. 75% students went home in the middle of the 8 week class, in spite that they already spent $380, and time.
Jerry's seminars and some of his seminar recordings are definitely good, and this is the reason I attend his class. But why you didn't attend? - Action is more than speech!
If you are never in Jerry's class, you're never supposed to talk in this TIP. Even thought he's your idol, why don't you just go to his class and spend 8 week terrible time and come back to talk?
In my company, here are many Whites, canada-born Asians, compared to them, Jerry is just a young average Changlish guy. - we don't have to see him as an idol the way you do.
By the way, "you not to spend any money on English any more " or not is my business, none of yours. If you're Jerry itself, I understand your anger, but if you aren't, you must be so stupid to bother others.
I have been studying English all the time, and looking for the best method. In fact, I spend 6 hours every week ($25/hr) with a Canadian licensed teacher right noow!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • No offense, my friend. I said I agree with you. I am not kidding you at all. I just sincerely think there is no need to spend any money. Where did you get the idea that I am making Jerry as an idol?
I don't have to and I will not. I believe I myself can already speak as good as him. It's that I just don't understand why you have to spend money on any class. You can live with no regret if you didn't take his course in the place. OK, I don't want to burn my energy on endless dispute. That's it for me.
            • Now ti's much better, and I believe you're not a 新概念的托!
              • I mean, I believe you're not a 新概念的托 JUST A BIT!

                  • Awesome! I've been been looking for good way to learn E, and got much improvement. Obviously, it's a long term to reach perfect language for us.
Now i'm not so ambitious, and restrict my E-learning goal to what makes my job and life better. I mean, whatever I learn from teacher, TV, book..., in a period, can make myself more competent for higher-rate job, and get better life, that proves my current learning is successful, and I start to move on to next step and goal.
Welcome to share more on that, and let's make meaningful progresses together.
