To that end, we could all probably be a little more gentle with the people around us. You never know what kind of morning a co-worker has already been through by the time a 9am conference call starts, or the pressures that our kids have faced during the day at school, or the demands on the leaders above us when our own boss drops yet another urgent request on us.
In addition to being gentle with others, we need to be gentle with ourselves. We need to accept that we are not perfect, that we have bad days, that we make mistakes, that we need a vacation, that our lives are too busy, and that we don’t have all the answers.
Gentleness is defined in many ways—kind natured, being moderate in force and degree so that the effects are not severe, and having a gracious and honourable manner. So as we seek to show respect to the people around us (one of our core values), that should include cutting ourselves some slack as well.
