Keep messing up

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛should be "i was awaiting him for one hour. he kept me wait for one hour"------> I think it it should be " he kept me waiting for an hour(他一直让我等着, 简直望穿秋水)" " or "He made me wait for an hour" (让我等一个小时的事他也做得出来).

---You are right.

"I STAYED WITH HIM AS A COMPANY UNTIL HIS SON WENT ...."
should be "I stayed as HIS company..." //"company" is an uncountable noun in this sentence.----->I do not think it is a matter of being a countable or uncountable noun here. Company can be one person who accompanies you or multiple people who accoumpany you. Single form and plural form are the same when it indicates the actual person or people. Only when it means "companionship/friendship", does it become uncountable.

Similarly, "go outiside" could be better than "go to outside". --->the reason why people make such a mistake may be that one does not know "go outside" is a verb + adverb structurally. Go outside (adverb) = go to the outside (noun). When one says
"go to the outside to buy sth" " go outside to buy sth", why don't we simply say " go to buy sth" or "go and buy sth". We usually underestimate the power of verbs and overestimate the need to use adj or adv.

----I don't understand what you meant by "people make such a mistake". What mistake? "go outside" is a verb+adverb structure, but I don't see anything wrong with that. Again, language is more about convention than logical analysis.

  • 工作学习 / English / 请教:有人知道wake, awake; wait, await, company, acompany etc.的区别吗? 糊涂了很多年,还是不明白。多谢了。

i waited him for one hour.
he kept me awaite for one hour.

I AM AFRAID OF DARK SO HE ACCOMPANIED ME TO GO TO OUTSIDE TO BUY SOME SNACKS LAST NIGHT。

I STAYED WITH HIM AS A COMPANY UNTIL HIS SON WENT BACK SO HE WOULDN‘T FEEL LONELY。
      • 多谢! 好象是A-开头多用于被动,对吗?
        • 深夜了,你的msn是away,朋友给你打招呼,问你,“Are you still awake"
        • 别客气。错误好像很多呢。。。不好意思
      • 强。
      • Different opinions.
"i waited him for one hour.
he kept me awaite for one hour."
should be "i was awaiting him for one hour. he kept me wait for one hour"

"I STAYED WITH HIM AS A COMPANY UNTIL HIS SON WENT ...."
        should be
        "I stayed as HIS company..."
//"company" is an uncountable noun in this sentence.

And there could be some improper expressions in your sentence.( that means they might not be definite errors, but just not that conventional)
e.g. I AM AFRAID OF DARK . Most people say "afraid of THE dark"
Similarly, "go outiside" could be better than "go to outside". And I believe native speakers could organize this sentence in another way because there were too many infinitives (to go to ouside to buy....)combining togethere that makes the sentence sound not that natural.

        Dicussions are welcome.
        • ....tks !
        • A still different opinion

            • Good language respect rules first and compromises with funny conventions to spice it up only. "Go to outside" is a mistake. Let's face it.
    • 好象还是有点不明白。不过多谢各位。
      • 一个强调动作,一个强调状态嘛。我3点醒了WAKE,我一直醒着AWAKE。我等车/我等着。过来陪你/一直陪着。
      • wake 动词, awake形容词...
      • a + verb 巧妙地把动词的动作性减弱, 延长动作的持续状态性, 使动词变成形容词.
        awake

        时态: awake--awoke--awoken
        或者awake--awaked--awaked

用作及物动词(vt): The song awoke my memory of high school because mum used to awake me every morning.

用作不及物动词(vi): I awoke at 2am in the morning and realized that it was time to awake to reality.

用作adj: I stayed awake till 2am in the morning.表状态
The baby is awake now. Go and feed her.
        但是没有acompany这个词, 只有accompany, 并非a+verb结构, 是个及物动词而已,作陪伴解. 是两回事.

        Wake

        tense: wake--woke-woken or wake--waked--waked

used as vi: I woke up at 2 am.

used at vt: Mom wakes me up every morning.

        Wait for Gateau 等待戈多
        Wait on Gateau 服务戈多
I wait for your rely = Await your reply.
    • awake, await are adjectives. 表状态, 前面要加系动词 be, feel
