So I think the marking standard varies from teacher to teacher. (No panic, you won't get a chance to be in my teacher's class, she's nursing her baby at home these days).
Personally, I don't think one's writing skills can improve significantly from this 3-month-long course. The key factor to get a possibly higher mark is to strictly follow the teacher's directions and keep your grammar mistakes as few as possible( to avoid them completely in an in-class assignment wasn't realistic to me).
If you still get some time before your course, you can start with reading articles regularly, say 30 minutes per day. It helped a lot in my case. Time magazine and columns on newspaper can be good choices, in my opinion.
Hope you enjoy your course and good luck.
