I just talked about “you are out of your mind” and “you don’t know jack” with my native co-workers. Here come some of their thoughts.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1, “you are out of your mind”. It means you are crazy. But it doesn’t mean the person you talk with is crazy. It means the idea the person has is a crazy idea. Here are two samples they said:
-A: Judy is 120 pounds. One day her friend said,” Judy, you have to lose 50 pounds to make you look better. Then Judy could say, “You are out of your mind”.
-B: Shaun asked Angela to have dinner with him on weekends. But Angela has told Shaun before that she’s not interested in him. Then Angela could said,” You are out of your mind.”

2, “you don’t know jack”. Actually, I don’t know what’s the meaning of this sentence. Now I understand. It means you don’t know anything. Here are two samples they said.
-A: You were trying to figure out how to transfer a pdf file to tif file in PhotoShop. Then you thought that Judy should know that because she’s a graphic designer. You asked Judy, but she said she didn’t know either. Now, you could say,” You don’t know jack.”
-B: Judy was working on Flash. You took a look by chance and found that Judy didn’t know how to use the software at all. Then you could say,” you don’t know jack.”

I asked them if those two sentences were rude, here is their answer:
“No.”
“It’s more forceful than it’s rude” (You don’t know a jack)
“It’s kind of joking and teasing”
“It depends how the person means it.”
“It depends on the situation and content”
“Even thank you can be rude”

(I don’t mean to judge who is right or who is wrong. I will appreciate if you read it as an English note. Have a nice sunny day everybody!)

              • but but but that's the best alternative for morpheus, it's a nice agent for the guetella network, I got "resident evil" from it the other day, my take is that
if searching the name of the movie cames up nothing, then try searching for "DVD, or DVD rip",

I just got Shrek and Chasing Amy off it, those are pretty old movies...

                patience, is a virtue
    • Thanks, and you too.
    • thanks for your post.
          • it's a long story, I will give you a full report when I got home tonight, there are about 3/4 rounds in the planning, lucky enough to dodge the first wave...my Dad fell at home, that's taking up
most of my attention these days
8:00pm voice message and your dad's story, that's why I ask you... anyway, good luck, you and your dad!
            • Sorry to hear that about your dad. Take care, Chairman Piggy.
            • good luck to you and your father.
    • I am out of my mind.
    • 如果是因为“you are out your mind" "you don't know jack" 这两句,我认为不应把它们归到辱骂范围。 I am sorry I don't mean it" 也不是什么难事。
      • not only these two
        • Anther one is "tax-free income aien't English" . Sorry, not 100% sure.
          • no, i couldn't remember, but not this..anyway, i think it's not important, it's over now.
        • This post was disappeared because the post it followed was deleted.
          • Really? Well, I just read some complaints from the author and even some acknowledgement from the moderator. Anyway, it's better to forget it.
    • Thank you very much. Sometime, I think cultural differences and the way of translation make misunderstand.
