本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1, “you are out of your mind”. It means you are crazy. But it doesn’t mean the person you talk with is crazy. It means the idea the person has is a crazy idea. Here are two samples they said:
-A: Judy is 120 pounds. One day her friend said,” Judy, you have to lose 50 pounds to make you look better. Then Judy could say, “You are out of your mind”.
-B: Shaun asked Angela to have dinner with him on weekends. But Angela has told Shaun before that she’s not interested in him. Then Angela could said,” You are out of your mind.”
2, “you don’t know jack”. Actually, I don’t know what’s the meaning of this sentence. Now I understand. It means you don’t know anything. Here are two samples they said.
-A: You were trying to figure out how to transfer a pdf file to tif file in PhotoShop. Then you thought that Judy should know that because she’s a graphic designer. You asked Judy, but she said she didn’t know either. Now, you could say,” You don’t know jack.”
-B: Judy was working on Flash. You took a look by chance and found that Judy didn’t know how to use the software at all. Then you could say,” you don’t know jack.”
I asked them if those two sentences were rude, here is their answer:
“No.”
“It’s more forceful than it’s rude” (You don’t know a jack)
“It’s kind of joking and teasing”
“It depends how the person means it.”
“It depends on the situation and content”
“Even thank you can be rude”
(I don’t mean to judge who is right or who is wrong. I will appreciate if you read it as an English note. Have a nice sunny day everybody!)更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
