Chapter One

If we use the modeling method to perceive all things in the world,we can classify them to simple systems, complicated systems and complex systems. What system the object is depends on what our goal is and how we model.

Simple systems are consisted of handful subsystems and the relation between them is very simple, such as in series, one's output is another's input.

Complicated systems are consisted of many and multiple elements and the relation between them is simple. Such as power system which include many plants and network, or an aircraft which has thousands assemblies. We can use mathematic tools to describe it. In most cases, we can get certain and satisfying answer.

Complex system: nonlinear, chaotic or complex, such as weather, stock market…We cannot predict them certainly and precisely. We have to develop other tools to deal with it, such as probability thoery etc. Do not think complex system just has many element and complex interaction. Only three objects run under Newton laws is a complex system too. We can say complex is the basic character of the university based huge time and space scale and Simple and certain is only temporal.

Chapter Two

The first good news is that 99 percents of everyday problems we need to solve belong to simple systems, or they can be transformed to simple system by using black box method etc. The second good news is normally that the fault only due to one cause. If we find the cause and fix it, the whole system will work well again.

When we deal with simple system, we need three things as below:
knowledge ,experience, and strategy

Knowledge comes from textbooks, manual, instruction books. We do not need creative minds here.

Experience comes from sophisticated workers.

People do not think much of strategy. Strategy is the proven ways to think. No matter how many parts the simple system includes, with clear strategies , you will not be confused, not be bewilered.

When we face the fault, we can ask ourself:

What kind of structure the system is? Do I know sufficient knowledge about it? Can I separate it to some parts? What kind fault it is? Guess possible causes. Is that only because outside causes?

The first bad news is that our brain can only handle one thing at one time even it has billions brain cells. We need focus. We need to organize the tasks one by one. The second bad news is that even when we deal with single fault, many possibilities contribute to the fault. We have to locate it, eliminate the false factors step by step. To do that, step one, we have to separate the system into several small subsystems that each can be tested its function. Step two, test the function of each subsystem. The fault is hiding in the dysfunction one. Continue doing the strategy, finally you will find the truth.

What can I do if I fail with a simple system?

Wrong response after failure: “It is a so simple system, why I still cannot handle it. Science does not work! The world is so complex to be made right.”

Reasons for your failure:

Reason one: maybe this system is just a little different with your knowledge. For example, only videotron need to be rebooted when you use different computer.
Reason two: Maybe there are more than one fault in the system although it does not often happen.
Reason three: you are too nervous, anxious.
Reason four: others human factor, other people’s cooperation, relationship with others.
