本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Many years ago when I was in the university, I attended a class near the end of a semester. The professor was telling the students some information of the final exam, such as date, time, location, duration, etc. Amongst the 25 or so students, about 6, including myself, were Chinese.
The class was fairly quiet until the professor said: “the time of the exam will be: 16 hundred hours”, when I heard my fellow Chinese classmates bursting into laughter.
I was stunned by their reaction for a few seconds and then quickly realized that they must have misunderstood the meaning of “16 hundred hours” when I heard one of them giggling: “16 hundred hours exam? Ha ha…”.
I took a look at the rest of the class and the professor, all of whom were baffled by this unexpected laughter. The professor apparently realized why these students were laughing and repeated the same information with a polite smile: it will be 4pm.
Although this incident was not a big deal at all, it has stayed in my memory since. I find it very embarrassing not only because these fellows did not know the Military Time (24 hours clock) but also because they laughed at the professor for no reason but their own ignorance. Actually the latter is even worse.
