The highest concentration of zinc is found in the choroid of the eye and optic nerve, followed by the prostate, bone, liver and kidneys, muscles, heart, spleen, testes, brain, and adrenals.* Zinc plays important roles in growth and development, the immune response, neurological function, and reproduction. Zinc also plays a regulatory role and is involved in gene expression, cell signalling, hormone release and apoptosis (gene directed cell death). High intakes of zinc may impair copper absorption. Greater than 50mg per day for several weeks may have adverse effects on copper levels. Supplemental iron can also interfere with zinc absorption.
