Sometimes it's what you watch...

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛If you follow one TV series, it's easy to understand the characters since you kind of expect what they will say under such circumstance.

But not all series are created equal in terms of easiness ESL viewers. I am ranking some of the series I have watched, the easiest comes first:

Friends
Seinfeld
The Simpsons
Fraser
The West Wing

Simpons is easy in phrase, but the cartoon characters speak fast and in high pitched voices, which makes it difficult to follow at first.

Fraser is highbrow, kind of British humor.

West Wing is very good. When I started to watch it last year, I could hear every word but could't make sense of the whole sentence. The characters make very intelligent conversation in a closely knit story. To solve this problem, I taped every episode and watch it twice. Caption - No Caption. After four episodes I can do No caption (which I will understand 70%) and then I turn on caption to pick up the rest.

For comedy movies like "My big fat Greek wedding" which don't have much accent, now I can understand 100%.

          • good good! tks tks!
                      • Persistence will lead you there. Like a Chinese idiom says practice makes perfect.
                      • CBC radio one, 99.1. All talk, no commercials.
Thanks for your opinion on IBM by the way.
                • Well, don't be so critical. You know that Jiaozi's LG is an English speaker.
                    • Don't be discouraged. There is a will, there is a way!

    • Understanding everything is impossible for adult English learners in just a few years. It takes a long time to reach that level. Culture difference, idiomaticity, content and context make it really difficult.
      xixixixi
      • You are great. You must be a language genius !
        • thank you, but.......you knew i was kidding, didn't you?
          • Yes. I knew that. I have learning English for more than 15 years, did my graduate work in an English school, and my level of Eglish is well above average. I wouldn't say I understand everything while watching TV.
            • you have learning?
              • Sorry, should be "have been learning!". By the way, I know you are a smart guy/gal by your name. Are you the offspring of the Royal Family of China, or Britain?
                • I am just a street urchin roaming Toronto and environs hereabouts...
                  • Yep. I was just joking.
                    • I know, but do you think any brass ring would hit me if I were really blue blooded?
                      • Probably not.
        • You must the genius' teacher!
