枫下沙龙 / 梦想天空 / Sorry for the doubt I might have cast upon the comparability between Jia Bao Yu and Werther, yet I do feel that there might be some reasons behind the doubtfulness.

Such that: Jia was a nobleman who played women, while Werther was not and he, as you indicated, was a toy to women, not the other way around?

As a woman worshipper, Jia, just like Werther, or even other delicate Romanticists such as Chopin, lives off female abundance (in terms of wealth oremotion, etc.) . their masculinity, in vulgar terms, their manhood, is consequently overshadowed, or even deprived to some extent, by the overwhelming femninine authority and power.

Do you mean that these two were perfect comparable subjects, and the reason behind that is they were actually two WOMEN who were just unfortunately living in two men's bodies?

Shall I bounce back with the strong statement YET AGAIN that " How could you say something like that to Werther"? Killing oneself consumes an enormous amount of manhood and courage, which apparently cannot be done simply by what you've indicated: DELICACY?

well, to kill oneself over rejected, unreciprocated, and unconsummated love is the ultimate symptom of degenerated masculinity.

So from your point of view, jumping on Albert and killing him right in front of Charlotte instead of himself was the only way for Werther to qualify himself as a man with masculinity ?

in principle, yes. having the will power and determination to fight for what one believes in is genuinely "manly", as we have witnessed in the animal kingdom as well as human world.

Under any circumstances, or under SOME / certain specified circumstances?

that is where wisdom comes in. your fight, just like every other action in your life, must be justifiable, not by others' rule or principle, but by your own conscience, or what we may understand as "mercy", or "grace".

In terms of wisdom, which one was wiser, if not nicer, Jia or Werther? To me, Werther was courageous, and he sacrificed his own life ( or his masculinity as you may like to put it) for Charllote to fulfill her obligation toward Albert.

neither of them have the privilege to brag about being endowed with (masculine) wisdom.

What message would you like to convey to me and to yourself by looking down upon Werther to such a catastrophical degree?

For a reading to be truly meaningful it must be an active interpretation. and in turn, for an interpretation to be authentic it must be delivered from a specific perspective that originates from the interaction of the interpreter's subjectivity, personality, and the content being interpreted itself. I just shared my reading with you. there is nothing coercive. and it is not about right or wrong.

No right or wrong, YES positive or negative? I can't help wondering if there is still a possibility that you may have some positive interpretation of Werther? May I have one or two?

I like Werthers rebellious spirit, his contempt of vulgarity, his noncompliant stance toward conformity, and his passion and idealism about feminine beauty.

And what do you like about Jia? You're the first one indicating to me that Jia and Werther are comparable, which was beyond my imagination before, yet not any more.

Dream of the Red Chamber was published in print in 1791, and Werther in 1774. Great minds think alike, again?

Wisdom has gender differentiation as well? We have male wisdom and female wisdom, that black and white?
