It all dependsUsually, people use "little" words in oral English. But those who have been well educated do not follow the rule. They may be very selective in using words so as to remind others of their identities. They may talk like a book. For instance, my boss prefer to use the word "hurdle" instead of "difficulty". To reach some conclusions, he may begin his words by saying "Having that said, blah blah...".
