I guess the context has something to do with politicsTrekkies and Trekkers are two different kinds of "Star Trek" fans. Although they may look the same to outsiders, they resent each other, and try to differentiate from one another.
As for Jean and Ernie, Jean is the Prime Minister of Canada, and Ernie is the Premier of Ontario.
