Best way to improve oral English is to work with native English speakers. My wife became fluent in oral English after only a few months making dumplings beside a local high school girl.If you can't find a paying job, try volunteering. Or go to church. Or go help an old lady. Or go baby sit a school age kid. I doubt ESL would help much - you don't get much chance to practice. Most of the time the teacher talks and rest of the time someone with better English.

One good way to improve your English, including writing skills, is to read a lot. Read newspapers, novels, anything. Try to read without looking up unknown words in dictionary. The key is quantity, not quality.

Also it's a good idea to listen a lot. Listen to radio. Watch TV. Watch movies. The key to good English is to practice. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. My favorite is "you ask me, me ask who": ugly English, but everybody understands.

Thank you very much for your replies, do you think it is realistic to practice/improve English in China? I am considering to go back to China to have a better TOEFL test result.

Of course. Same methods: talk a lot, read a lot and listen a lot. I passed TOEFL soon after I came to Canada with high scores. I read China Daily and English novels. I listened to New Concept and VOA. And I talked to classmates in English often.

Basically 6.5 -7 is good enough. Univ of Toronto admission requires a minimum of 6.5 with individual score no lower than 6.0 to be qualified for consideration.

I do not think it is necessary to take particular courses. Just watch some TV, it is better to watch them with captions, and afterwards without captions. and communicate with local people. it helps a lot
