相信过了7年之痒之后,the major problem is not the language itself. Instead, it's principally culture related. For instance, people talk to you mentioning something similar to 小嘎子,or some other cartoon characters.

I totally agree. Sometimes I have the same problem and I honestly think the only solution to it is to make some "native speaking" friends and you will be surprised to find out how many different slangs you learn from them:-)I have learned so much from my friends and that's also the reason why i want to get them invovled in the training program.

I know it's easier said than done. But we've got to start somewhere, right? That's how my Canadian friend and I got the incentive to start this English training program, cause we understand how hard and frustrating it is to learn a foreign language without any help.

Well, it does all come down to attitude. Like you said if you want to get over the language barrier and be a part of the mainstream, you can. But if you are happy with being on the border, then that's your choice, however,it might also mean not being able to reach your full potentials(or your goals) for work and life and also not being able to fully appreciate all the fun and beauties of the mainstream culture we now live in.

haha, i know what you are talking about. People who watch the movies without reading the books say the same thing. But you've got to read the books, they are REALLY good! Then you will understand why people (well, mostly women) are crazy about them:-)

Thanks Teresa. So I need to find the books to read first. May I ask how old were you when you came to Canada and where you'd like to host the training class?

You will find those books at Costco. I came to Canada when I was 23 (wow, it's been over 7 years!), but if you were thinking the younger you come here the better your language is, that's probably not the case. It's not a matter of age, not a matter of confidence and efforts of course:-) Honestly, we are just at the planning stage of the training course and finding a place to hold the courses is one of the toughest problems for us. But we are working hard on it and hopefully we will have a real class pretty soon! And of course, if any of you guys here have good ideas, you are welcome to let me know.

I think most time it depends on if you are a woman or man. Chinese man will face more difficult to find a native friend comparing to Chinese woman.

Sorry I don't think this is a reasonable excuse. Your sexuality doesn't help you with having native friends, unless they want something else from you:-). My best native friends are all girls!

The best thing to do is watch TV, watch some Sitcom, like "Everybody loves Raymand", "Two and Half man" etc. then you might find the conversation that you can join. Don't worry about the accent. everyone has it.

More face to face conversation with those people with accents will help you know the uniqueness of the accets, therefore one day you will understand with no problem via phone too.
