This question was brought up to me by a friend of mine. I told him there was no problem with this sentence. It is the same as : "he had too many of one drink"..

Could you expand it a bit more? I think it basically means "he had one drink too many times (or bottles)" or "he had too many (bottles) of a (one) drink". It is just a colloquial way of expression.

It means he had one drink more than he can handle, i.e., he was drunk. Doesn't matter if it's one kind or many kinds.

If that was the case, should "much" be used instead of "many" as "drink" would be an uncountable noun? I still believe that "drink" here is a countable noun and simply means "bottles (can, glass or whatever) of drink"

It means he started to get drunk, or he was slight drunk -- that one drink made a big difference (between sober and drunk)!
