我感觉,听的多了你就会知道,在加拿大,大家说的建筑物里的走廊,甚至包括很窄的那种,一般都用hallway,而不用corridor。但我说的也不一定对。

进一步感觉到这不仅仅是词意的问题了, 而是文化问题. 又如, town car 在北美偏偏要叫 limousine, dinner jacket 大家都说成 tuxedo, 我私下觉得挺造作的. 也许北美地广人大, 说话也喜欢财大气粗.

刚才问了native speaker,town car 是Lincoln车系的一个品牌,跟limousine不是一回事。dinner jacket也跟tuxedo不是一回事。

I'm very disappointed in you, to say the least. You are a well respected id here, and it is shocking to read this thread. Many of these words are used in everyday English,and are a part of the core vocabulary of an average high school graduate. If this is the standard our so-called best and brightest are setting for the rest of the new immigrants, I really don't know what to say.

兵哥啊, 这个词我是25年前学的. 我还知道 lorry, layby, caravan呢. 用不着用狗搜的. 英语有一定的地域性和时间性, 你我不知道或没见过的不见得没有或不存在.

其实这些你认为是歪词的实在是常用不过的英语单词了, 只不过北美很少见到罢了. 英国人或者多数欧洲人只要会开车,没有不知道这些我们在北美叫truck, rest area/ service area, trailer...

原因1)错别字,和教育程度有关,母语人士也会犯。2)错音字/用法错误,和非母语学习程度有关。3)习惯用语,和本土外乡及文化有关,纽约客在伦敦说 Hi 就是乡巴佬一个。Washroom 到了南边就变成了restroom. 以上三点错误,皆不限于Chinese.
