IMHO it doesn't matter how many words you know. The key is to use English as freely as possible. A 5-year-old local kid knows less words than you or me, but he/she is more comfortable using English.

I asked my co workers the same questions. Basically, there is no answer. If you can have vocabulary as high school students, I think that would be enough( about 8000-10000).

基本上TOEFL词汇量就够了+尽可能多的短语, 短语多少的运用决定你的对话的生动性. 另外多读报纸, 可以知道最新的流行词.

有个网站可以测试你的词汇量：http://testyourvocab.com/。根据他们的数据，native 的人约 25,000。在英语国家居住的外国人可以达到 15,000。
